79 Year Old Portlander to Swim 80 Laps for International Charity
PORTLAND, OR—Long-time Oregon Athletic Clubs (OAC) member Barbara Dougan will swim 80 laps for the Angels of Hope Foundation at RiverPlace Athletic Club (RAC) on May 1.
Most 80 year olds would prefer a quiet, afternoon birthday party—maybe some cake, a few cups of tea, a game of shuffleboard. But it’s safe to say Barbara isn’t your average octogenarian. The vibrant Portlander’s birthday celebration includes plans to swim 80 laps in the club’s pool alongside friends, family, and other RAC members/staff during a special fundraiser to benefit the Angels of Hope Foundation’s “Peaceful Home for Children” (PHC) orphanage in Kianyaga, Kenya.
“Barbara Dougan is the most adventuresome woman I know,” says Front Desk Service Professional Denise Danforth. “She climbed Mount Everest with her daughter and granddaughter a couple of years ago, and last year, she won our I Lost it at the Club competition, logging the most exercise points!”
Barbara , who has been a Charter Member since 1988, couldn’t imagine a more fitting combination for her birthday celebration—swimming and raising money for an organization near and dear to her heart. Her goal is simple: asking each participant to pledge one dollar per lap in the hopes of collecting $4,000, 100% of which will be donated directly to the orphanage.
“PHC is located on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, where fourteen sweet children (age four to ten) are expected to live most of their lives, as adoption in Kenya is uncommon,” says Barbara. “The money we raise will be held in an education fund already established, so that when the children are ready for secondary school, they will have the resources they need.”
There will be three lap lanes reserved on May 1 for all RAC members interested in joining the charity swim. Registering is easy: just stop by the front desk at RAC and sign up!
Unable to participate on May 1? “Not a problem,” says Barbara, “You can swim any way, any time,” and sign up when/where it’s most convenient for you. Visit Barbara’s website to download and print the pledge sheet so that your friends and family can sponsor you, and to donate directly to PHC via Pay Pal.

Oregon Athletic Clubs’ annual member food drive in conjunction with Haggen, has been successful since its kick off on November 1. With one week left (ends on 11/24/10) we’re working hard to reach our goal to collect 2,010 pounds of food, which will be donated to the Oregon Food Bank for OR and WA families in need this holiday season.

It’s as easy as purchasing just one extra item (non perishable/dry and canned goods) while you do your shopping! On your way out of the store, drop your items in the donation barrel located at the store entrance.
And to show our appreciation of your support, OAC will give you a complimentary five-day pass to one our clubs, and you will also be entered into a raffle to win a $50 Wellness Gift Card that may be used in any one of our clubs or Pointe Spas!
Don’t forget, you may also donate at any one of OAC’s locations: RiverPlace, Bethany and Hawthorn Farm Athletic Club.
